City Description


Durham is a city located in the north central section of the state of North Carolina. The city is located in and is the county seat of Durham County. The area was first settled in the mid 1700's. It was incorporated as a city in 1869. Durham is part of the "Research Triangle" which consits of the areas of Raleigh, Durham, and Dunn. Durham is home to North Carolina Central University and Duke University. Durham is a fast growing city with the population estimated at 187,035 in 2000 and growing to 223,284 by 2008. The city is part of the Durham MSA, which consists of four counties and a population of 501,228 as of 2009. The largest employer in the city is Duke University which employs 39,000 employees.
